Habit scorecard: see your day as it really is
Before you change anything, list what you already do from waking to sleeping and give each habit a +, – or =. Awareness comes first.
My day
- Wake up
- Turn off alarm
- Check phone in bed
- Drink a glass of water
1 effective · 1 ineffective · 2 neutral
How to score honestly
The question is not “is this habit good?” but “does it help the person I’m trying to become?”. That keeps the exercise tied to identity rather than guilt.
- + Effective: helps in the long run.
- – Ineffective: works against you over time.
- = Neutral: neither, like putting on shoes.
Many behaviours happen without conscious attention; in a diary study, Wood, Quinn and Kashy (2002) found that roughly 43% of everyday actions were performed almost daily in the same context, usually while people were thinking about something else. Writing them down makes the autopilot visible.
Then what?
Use a “+” habit as the anchor for a habit stack, and pick one “–” to redesign with the bad-habit plan.

Questions
What is the Habit Scorecard?
It is an awareness exercise from Atomic Habits. You list your daily habits in the order you do them and mark each one “+” (effective), “–” (ineffective) or “=” (neutral), judged by whether it helps you become the person you want to be. The aim is to notice, not to change anything yet.
How do I decide if a habit is good or bad?
Ask whether the habit casts a vote for the identity you want. Checking your phone first thing might be “–” for someone who wants calm mornings and “=” for someone else. The same action can score differently for different people.
What do I do after the scorecard?
Pick one “–” habit to redesign (make it invisible or harder) and one “+” habit to use as an anchor for a new habit stack. Keep the rest as they are for now.
